It works with two alters, I couldn't get it to work with one -
ALTER TABLE table ADD newcol TEXT;
ALTER TABLE table FULLTEXT(newcol);
Also, you might want to try the MySQL mailinglist.
You will also need a VERY recent MySQL version, 3.23.23 or higher.
