Question regarding DB2 access

I understand that accessing DB2 databases uses the unified ODBC connection: If I want to use direct DB2 access do I have to compile PHP with the --ibm-db2 option. If I do that, will the standard odbc functions only be usable with db2? i.e. I will not be able to use them to access normal odbc databases? I also saw some info recently about a DBI module for PHP - Is there any information available for that? betas?
