Thttpd is faster than apache. It also is less resource intensive.
Both of these statements are results of my own testing.
As for Apache+php and thttpd+php, I have only used apache+php. I plan
on using thttpd+php once it becomes more mainstream, but my feeling is
that it is just to new to run a production web site where 100%
24/7/365 uptime is critical.
