I don't think search engines read php, and you can be sure they don't
read your whole database. Maybe they open php pages but never with an active
query. It is estimated that search engines only see a small part of the
entire web, as many valuable pages are served through a database. Just like
we can only observe only 10% (or so) of all matter in the universe.
This is realy a pity as database pages are often the best pages on the web.
What I did for a seed shop (www.bolster.nl - Dutch) is to make one large page
especially for search engines. This page was an output of all names of the
plants plus some keywords. I fed this page as an HTML link to search engines,
and every plant name would be linked to the appropriate page (in this case
javascript driven pages (Yes! i made a javascript based database fed by an
Excel macro!(Yes I think I wasted a lot of time, now I know that php is easy
and it is not that expensive to rent php/mysql server space (the Excel macro
is really useful though, still looking for a good name. It inserts data form
an excel worksheet in a template HTML file sort of like PHP would do, so not
a boring table like that stupid Excel wizard does but in HTML like
<font color="[ROW1]">[ROW2]</font>[ROW3] <br><b>See
also</b> [ROW4]
would become
*Zucchini* is a lovely plant but after eating it for three months
one gets quite fed up with it.
See also pumpkin.

See also Zucchini.
)))).
Anyway I was talking about a workaround to get on search engines. Did not
work that well unfortunately, ranking is still pretty low. Due to all these
bastards selling seed on html pages getting a better ranking.
nighty night!
