using getimagesize() with jpegs?

Hi everyone,
Documentation is a little poor on this function. Anybody see why this
doesn't work?
<?
$jpg_url = "http://www.test.com/pic.php?var=1&varr=1";
$image_size = GetImageSize($jpg_url);
?>
produces this error:
Warning: Unable to open http://www.test.com/pic.php?val=1&varr=1
in
/home/peachtree/www/room.php on line 117
the file gets displayed with no problems via the browser. (i'm sending the
right Content-type)
PHP version is: 4.0.1pl2
The doc's say that GetImageSize is independent of GD, however i know there
were issues with jpegs up
to PHP4 >= 4.0RC1. Any help would be appreciated very much. Thank you.
