trouble with GD

I just built GD and PHP --with-gd without any complaints.
phpinfo() says:
GD Support enabled
GD Version 1.6.2 or higher
PNG Support enabled
But, when I try to use any of the image functions, I get parse errors.
Any thoughts on what the problem might be?
