Problems with PHP+GD 2

Ok.. more details... I am using gd1.8.3, libpng1.0.7 and zlib1.1.3 and I am trying to work with .png files. I am trying to install PHP4 over a Red Hat 6.2 machine with access to GD library, but its not working... So, I installed zlib and libpng libraries and gd too, as well as PHP and Apache. The PHP functions are working fine and the access to my remote Mysql Database is working too, but I am having troubles with GD. When I tryed a simple "Hello Word" program to open an image, make some lines over it and save it with another name, no error msgs are produced and the code is executed/interpreted (I dont know) fine. But the new image that was generated is wrong, with 0 bytes. I thought that it could be dir. permissions but I checked this and nothing again. Since this I had installed all the stuff more than six times and no error msg appered in the install process and the same mistake happens.. So... if anyone could help me.. I would be very glad.
