i don't know if there's anything in apache that would work like cron,
although, since everything is in there, i wouldn't be surprised if there
were :).
anyway, i was going to ask a related question. i'm thinking of rewriting
some long running processes [they're now in C/C++] in PHP. they're like
daemons in that they never die except when the computer restarts, but
they don't accept socket connections. i was wondering if anyone had
tried this and had any problems with it. i realize that, windows being
what it is, there will probably be problems in windows. but how about in
Unix? would there be problems, if a PHP program were to run indefinitely,
allocating and de-allocating resources continuously?
i wonder this since PHP seems to have been designed with short running
programs (CGI scripts, and now embedded script programming) in mind.
might there be something with PHPs memory management, garbage
collection, resource reclamation that doesn't work if the PHP program runs
for days, weeks, months at a time?
does anyone have any experience with this?
oh, and the way this is related is, Ramender, if you have no cron, and no
other way to do this within the system (Task Scheduler? surely there's
something like it in whatever flavor of Windows you've got running...
unless you need better than minute resolution) then you could write a
script that goes into a loop. in the loop, it sleeps for whatever your
desired resolution is. when it wakes up, it would do whatever you need it
to do.
