Well...I"m currently working on a large scale e-commerce site (auction
site..tons of PHP<->Database interaction) and PHP does a pretty good job of
scaling. I think it all depends on how good a coder you are. We are currently
running into problems because some of the code was written badly and its
slowing things down.
I'm going off on a side track though...you should check the php.net/sites.php
directory, they have a pretty big list.
