restricting access to images

hello,
if i have some images in say /img/various.jpgs. how can i stop someone
from putting www.site.com/img/various.jpgs into their browser and seeing
the images, yet at the same time use /img/various.jpgs as valid img
srcs= within my pages?
realms? permissions? most likely something in apache eh?
