Unfortunately Sendmail is not as popular as it once was, as a commercial
developer my clients would not be tolerante of their website mandating which
mail server they must run therefore in this case I choose portability.
Additionally using PEAR Mail you can actually specify if you want to use
sendmail, backend to the mail() call or use SMTP with Authentication.
Personally when both PEAR and non PEAR packages are available I generally
adopt the PEAR package unless there are credible benefits of the non PEAR
package.

But what about those of us without sendmail? :)
