Hello,

Unfortunately Sendmail is not as popular as it once was, as a commercial developer my clients would not be tolerante of their website mandating which mail server they must run therefore in this case I choose portability.I think you are not aware that all other Unix/Linux mailers were made to be compatible with sendmail and so all of them provide a wrapper program that emulates sendmail mailer program. Most other programs that depend on a local mailer system always call the sendmail program, including PHP. If you look at php.ini it is always configure by default to call sendmail program.
Additionally using PEAR Mail you can actually specify if you want to use sendmail, backend to the mail() call or use SMTP with Authentication. There is no point in calling the sendmail program directly from your scripts instead of the mail function unless you need to set special arguments that you can't configure in php.ini yourself for some restriction. Using SMTP to queue messages does not make any sense if you can use a local mailer. SMTP only makes sense when you need to queue a message in a remote machine, like when you are using Windows.
Personally when both PEAR and non PEAR packages are available I generally adopt the PEAR package unless there are credible benefits of the non PEAR package. The original poster wanted to use the mail function. He can use the mail function for what he needs if he can change the php.ini settings. There is no need for an external package. -- Regards, Manuel Lemos PHP Classes - Free ready to use OOP components written in PHP http://www.phpclasses.org/ PHP Reviews - Reviews of PHP books and other products http://www.phpclasses.org/reviews/ Metastorage - Data object relational mapping layer generator http://www.meta-language.net/metastorage.html
