I'd use GD to dynamically create a thumbnail rather than forcing a visitor
to upload a thumbnail, it will be frustrating and annoying to the user and
result in them not having good things to say about the website.
I prefer to store images on the filesystem for larger applications, it is
more efficient than saving them in the database.
For small websites where ease of use and very very few images will be stored
(< 30) and it is more important to be able to easily setup the site I have
been known to store images in the database.
I always set a max full photo size and resize the photo to the max size if
it is bigger than that (that way I'm not storing 8 megapixel pictures in the
database when I just want 500 pixels wide).
Generate the thumbnail when the file is uploaded, not when it is viewed as
this is inefficient and will slow your page loads down quite a bit.

well as i just found out after the current year is over i.e. 2004 then all
the images for that year get sorted out and put elsewhere so i dont know if
a db would work...

Andy,
I had a go at something like this for a nonleague football website (
www.marinefc.com/gallery/index.php ). Contributors to the site can upload
their own images but in doing so they are prompted to upload both a small
thumbnail as well as the full size image. This creates a record in a
database containing an ID number for the image as well as additional
information such as a caption, alternative text and who contributed the
image.
When visitors to the site look at the gallery of images they are presented
with a listing of relevant images with the thumbnails and they can click on
these to be shown the full image. There's a further example of this at
another nonleague football site at www.kipax.com. I suspect there are ready
made applications to do this but I wanted to have a go at creating my own.
HTH,
Michael Egan

hi...
how would somebody create a thumbnail that has a caption under it and then
when clicked on shows a larger size of the same graphic but still shows the
caption under it?? havent quite figured that one out yet...
thumbnail specs:
total size with graphic, whitespace border on all 4 sides and caption at the
bottom cant exceed 150px wide and 160.332px tall. thumbnail graphic must be
clickable to make image larger (includes caption).
enlarged image specs:
height: 385px, width: 385px (no more than that to prevent pixelations). the
enlarged graphic must be in its own window and include the caption that was
on the original page. the enlarged image must have a link somewhere to allow
the window to be closed and returns the viewer to the original page that
image was on.
page specs:
800 wide and 600 tall 20 images a page no less (40 a page if possible but
not required).
clients preferred graphic/image format: jpg
anyways does anybody know how to go about this sort of thing?? or is it sort
of unpractical to have thumbnails that small and have captions under them??
(sorry for my stupidness on images but when you cant see them it hurts)...
