Victor, I was having the same (or similar) linking problems under Solaris 8. What confused me was that Apache with PHP and MySQL had compiled perfectly on our production machine under Solaris 2.6 in an installation from a couple of years ago (Apache 1.3.0 and PHP 3.0.15 with MySQL 3.21.33). So to test a hypothesis, I tried compiling Apache 1.3.12, PHP 4.0.0 with MySQL 3.21.33 (MySQL was from the pre-compiled binary tarball) on our production machine. As it turns out, Apache/PHP/MySQL compiles perfectly under Solaris 2.6. Some more investigation revealed that Solaris 8 was using a newer version of the ELF libraries. I'm thinking that it's either a problem with the ELF libraries themselves or with the setup of the libraries in Solaris 8. Under Solaris 2.6, I just ran the configure scripts for PHP and Apache as prescribed in the plethora of resources out there, and it worked just fine. We did, however, add a symlink in /usr/local/mysql/lib called mysql and point it to ./ . This seemed to solve a single linking error (not the same ones as I was getting under Solaris 8) in PHP, but otherwise, it wasn't complaining about anything else. My sysadmin is right now going back over my footsteps to see if I missed anything when I was trying to compile under Solaris 8. I'll keep you up-to-date on our progress...that is, if we find anything. Good luck! Stephen. P.S.--I'm glad to know that I'm not the only one having this problem.
