class method() definition ??? parse error, expecting `')'' ...

Hello Sorry if this is absolutely dead obvious, but I'm completely at a loss... I'm trying to create a class method, called (for example) function set_Profile( $this->$UID ) // { $this->customer_ID=$this->form['customer_ID'] $this->name_first=$this->form['name_first']; $this->name_last=$this->form['name_last']; ... } But whenever I test the script, I get : Parse error, Expecting `')'' in line...: Strange way to quote a paren, no? If I remove the parameter, ie function set_Profile( ) // $this->$UID ... } the script parses OK, but obviously, this is not acceptable!
