Make error in php

Hi,
I have been trying to install php-4.0.2 on a BSDI BSD/OS 4.0.1 server but
get an error when running make. Could anybody please help to overcome this
problem.
This is the error I get
"Makefile", line 34: Need an operator
"Makefile", line 35: Need an operator
"Makefile", line 36: Need an operator
Fatal errors encountered -- cannot continue
And the relevant lines in the Makefile is ,
include $(top_srcdir)/build/rules.mk
include $(top_srcdir)/build/library.mk
include $(top_srcdir)/build/program.mk
