Shopping Carts -> DB or Session Data?

Hi,
I'm looking for some advice....
1) When creating a shopping cart, should I store the session data (ie the
carts contents) in a database table, or using session_register. This needs
to be able to cope with 10,000 visitors an hour.
2) How should I tidy the data up afterwards, for i) session_register and ii)
database?
