Varchar problem in PHP4.0.2 + Oracle 8.0

Hi All,
Has any one faced a problem while retriving the varchar field in Oracle
8.1 or 8.0 db.
I am able to get Number and date fields and even BLOB too, but not
Varchar or char, Can u guess where is the problem.
My conf is as fillows,
Remote Database : Oracle 8.0.5 running on WIn NT
Redhat linux 6.2 with Apache 1.3.12, and Oracle 8.0.5 client installled
and PHP 4.0.2
Is it the version problem or php bug, can any one of you write the best
installtion setup like which versions to use sothat there won't be
conflict with versions for above setup
Any help will be really appreciated
