Here is what I use:
if(eregi("^([_\.0-9a-z-]+@)([0-9a-z][0-9a-z-]+\.)+([a-z]{2,3})$",$email) ) {

This is not infallible, but it does check to make sure that an email address
is in a valid format (I believe this is on the PHP site as well...or
something very close to it). If you are asking for something to check
whether or not an email address actually EXISTS, well that is an entirely
different issue which I do not believe is possible at this time.
