I tried this code also and it worked like a charm. But do note, I set the
$test variable like this (though snipped it for brevity when sending this
email):
$test = "1. vi. [orig. from BASIC's `CHAIN' statement] To hand off ...
... number of links on the chain.";
Perhaps you didn't quote it properly or used single quotes rather than double
quotes?
