The roxen webserver is indeed written in Pike, but this is somewhat saying like "IMP is written in PHP". It is, but it makes use of the IMAP extensions to PHP in order to efficiently implement the IMAP protocol. Like PHP, Pike is an extensible language and it contains many native language extensions written in C and exposed as Pike functions. Roxen is a very memory hungry webserver, but given enough RAM for caching it is quite efficient. Real.COM, the real networks website, was at one time number six in traffic worldwide and is completely powered by Roxen. > How it's compared to the servers written in C and compiled, > e.g. Apache, in terms of performance? See the real.com site. Performance is not the problem of Roxen. The problem of Roxen is more in the areas of marketing and packaging. It is close to impossible to properly build and package a current Roxen installation. Also, the Roxen team is somewhat inaccessibe regarding third party extensions. This has lead to a code fork at the level of 1.3 and there is now the "official" Roxen 2.x distribution made by Roxen, the company, as well as the Caudium project (see http://www.caudium.net, http://www.caudium.org), sponsored among others by David Hedbor, one of the original Roxen authors. This is however not the issue I wanted to address. My point is that the Roxen model is close to perfect in separation of content and layout and there are some useful lessons to be learned for PHP in the area of XML/XSLT integration as well as in the area of automated caching.
