Help with install please

Hi, I installed PHP4 on my apache server. I did the configure with apache and mysql, ran make then make install. I ran the configure with the activate module php line, make and make install with apache. Basically the same steps that the php install docs show. (http://www.php.net/manual/install.unix.php) Everything worked, my scripts seem to work fine. BUT, I can't use any apache directive for php in my httpd.conf file, like: <Directory /blah> engine off </Directory> Apache just gives me a syntax error when trying to start. Did I have to do something different when compiling one or the other? I also noticed that the only php line in my httpd.conf file is the application mime type, but nothing about any php modules.
