Sounds like a time-out error from the browser getting tired of waiting for
a slow page...
Try using ab (apache benchmark) on your SSL server (and your regular one)
and see what the response times are like. SSL is notoriously slower than
regular HTTP (like, 50 times slower) and if your SSL is connecting to a
credit card server, *that* also could be dog-slow, and...
