I'm finding some very good results in the last couple of days. I've
yet to use it on a live page, but I have a test file I got from a
system that did so on a global scale (in apache, mod_gzip;
http://freshmeat.net/projects/mod_gzip/)
My test files are at http://www.bigsites.co.uk/~alister/
music.htm is a plain html 650kb file, a large table.
music.php is the same html (included), but wrapped with class
gzip_encode (from http://Leknor.com/code/)
My own test via a decent v90 modem (connecting =>49,333bps) show 1/4
of the time and 1/13th the data transfer for these test files.
It may not be worth encoding however if the page is smaller than say
30k, but for huge pages - like 650k, it's hard to say no.
