These are apache predefined variables.
they are authomaticaly assigned to you by apache and often they are what
your browser sends to the server in it's first pocket identifiying itself.
they are not too reliable.
try to use things like getenv(HTTP_REFERER) , getenv(REQUEST_URI) etc...
(no dollar sign is needed inside getenv() , just the APACHE pred. var..)

That is very interesting!
When I'm on a non-SSL website, the HTTP_REFERER work! But when I'm on a SSL
website, the HTTP_REFERER doesn't work. Why is that? Is HTTP_REFERER a php
code or a html code?
I'm trying to figure out if the SSL is the issue or if it is the lack of
HTML in the SSL which is the issue.
Anyone know?
Thanks,
Scott
