Everyone, thanks for your help. Yes, I understand now. When I
"View Page Source" in Netscape the newlines are there.
So, I'm not totally clear on the usefulness of '\n' anyway, in
PHP, unless it's in a PRE block. Presumbly in this case the
result would be the same (with <br/>) with or without the '\n'.
