Well, resizing will take a bit, GD isn't terribly fast. But if at all
possible, you may want to consider making them jpeg's before scaling
them. The gif format is very bad at scaling down to a thumbnail size. So
it may be worth testing how a gif scales, and comparing it to how that
same file as a jpeg scales.
For what it's worth, it's a fairly simple proces that shouldn't incur too
much of a load. It may take a couple minutes, depending on your platform.
