ibm db2 on different host than localhost

Hi,
i have a "simple" situation, i want to connect to a db2 on AS/400 with
PHP.
So i read in the archives that a configure --with-ibm-db2 works fine.
But because
the database server is not on the application server, i dont have the
server db2 APIs
on the php host. There is a product called db2 connect for linux from
ibm,
which should be a db2 client.
1. has anybody tried to use it with "--with-ibm-db2" ?
2. has anybody ever tried to connect to a different host with db2?
3. does i have a chance?
I read about many possibilities to connect to db2/400, one was with
perl,
the other with java, but as you folks might know, i want to stay with
php to solve this problem.
So, i appreciate every hint on that.
