Hi Ian,
My only formal programming training was in VB, i then moved to ASP
which ws a easy trasition as far as syntax goes, but was quite bit
more of a challenge from the perspective of building a web appplication
as opposed to a desktop app. I found that some things just didt gel
straight away
but then again i prety much taught myself. after playing with asp fro
several months and
developeing an intranet system,i became increasingly annoyed at the
performance degradation
of NT 4.0. Also being rather keen on Linux i begn tpo experiment with PHP
(i was laready using mysql)
and to my good frotune found my ASP applications very easy to port and the
syntax just took a few weeks to get used
soo i had rewritten my intranet apps and my desire to code increased 10
fold. I have since changed jobs and code in
PHP full time. So in my opinion and experience your friend will find it
hard to begin with but if the web is where
they wish to take their apps, I say go for it. another option would be to
take up Delphi(which craps on VB) and look
at the Web Broker technology i ahevnt done mcun woith it myself but some
Delphi freaks i know rave about it (cross
platfrom wont be so much of and issue soon since Borland are currently
working on Kylix(Delphi/C++builder for Linux).
Hope my input helps.
Cheers
Steven

I've been talking to a developer about a game project. He's used to
writing desktop apps with Visual Basic.
For those of you who are fluent in PHP and Visual Basic, how difficult
do you think it would be for him to pick up PHP and convert some of his
apps?
I'd just like to have some input before I suggest it.
