PHP 4 CGI binary trouble

Hello all.. Trying to get PHP 4 to run as a CGI-binary... culled the archives and compiled with the recommended options, set up httpd.conf but no go. Two things happen depending on the config in httpd.. either the script displays as text, or I get a input file error. #!/usr/local/bin/php is at the head of the script, and it runs from the command line... but not via apache.
