Mod_Rewrite

I'm trying to use Mod_Rewrite on my web site to allow for search engine rankings. I have pretty well figured out how to use the Mod_Rewrite and how to use it to get the result, but when I'm rewriting a URL that has variables past through the query string they don't seem to be active in mod_rewrite. For example this is a URL that has been rewritten: http://www.mapsoutpost.com/?mid=reviews&rid=tfc TO: http://www.mapsoutpost.com/tfc.html Using the first one brings query's the database and returns the results and displays them on the page, however, the one being rewritten does not, like it doesn't recognize the variables or something.
