We dont run NIS on the Unix box and i really want to try to mimise the
changes/install to the host machine.
Have you any seen any source for something like the C Deamon you describe as
this would be perfect.

If you run NIS then yp_match() is what you want.
Otherwise a small C daemon on the remote box could listen on a port, and
handle
the authenticate, and return a 'Ya' - 'Na'.
('course all this should be behind the firewall)
