Actually, and just MHO, I think such things suck. They just get in the
way.

'The LZW patent, as well as its international counterparts, and similar
patents filed by others, are expected to remain valid for at least 20
years from the original filing date, i.e. until June 19, 2003.'
If you want, I have (illegal in many countries) rpms (should work for
you if you're using Linux (god forbid that you should use Internet
Insecurity Services under Windows); if you're using any other *nix, I
can send you the .spec and/or the three gd patches) of gd (also patched
with a shared patch) and php patched to do gif, png, jpeg, truetype,
etc. I haven't got around to testing them yet though.

RTFM
http://www.php.net/manual/ref.image.php
'In order to read and write images in jpeg format, you will need to
obtain and install jpeg-6b (available at
ftp://ftp.uu.net/graphics/jpeg/), and then recompile
gd to make use of
jpeg-6b. You will also have to compile PHP with --with-jpeg-
dir=/path/to/jpeg-6b.'
PS. It is really painful to read your message because it is in HTML and
some illegible sans-serif font (they are *all* illegible to someone like
me, who gazes upon monospaced fonts all day and can truly appreciate
their beauty :)).
So please send your emails as plain text, not HTML. (This is a good idea
for other reasons: saves the evidently creaking php mail server (HTML is
5* the size of plain text) bandwidth, saves space in my mailbox, as well
as that of the other people on this list, and allows people that can't
read HTML email to read the message.

Microsoft should switch to the vacuum cleaner business where people actually
want products that suck.
