Hhhhmmm... that little point... i think it just doesn't go there...
And a little suggestion...
The code you're using:
$message = "This is a test\n";
$message .= "of the\n";
$message .= "mail function\n";
does just the same as:
$message = "This is a test
of the
mail function\n";
At least, PHP 3.0.9 and PHP 3.0.11 doesn't seem to have any problems having multi-line strings
in the code.

The other thing is to ensure the configuration of the mail server in the local machine. It's
strange that it hangs up, i have only a
web server at home (no mailing server) and i just get an error when trying to send mail.
That annoys me, sorry i cannot help more...
