First of all, your choice of language doesn't have anything to do with
web clustering.
I can't give details as to our configuration (for many reasons), but I
can say that with tools such as
- The Linux High Availability project
http://www.linuxha.org/
- Linux virtual server
http://www.linuxvirtualserver.org/
a completely opensource highly available server farm is totally
possible and being done -- I would know, I'm doing it. I'm not
sure, but I think linux.com may be using a similar setup -- and they
might share their configuration.
Tools such as Linux virtual server can handle multiple clusters of
different services. Using Linux virtual server means that
each service highly available and clustered.
Another option could be DNS round robin. I'm sure there are others.
You might want to read a little about multi-tiered (or three tier) web
site infrastructure to get a basic idea how to do something like this.
If you choose to not go with opensource solutions, you can get a
similar solution from a number of other vendors (Cisco, F5 networks,
others I'm sure) -- they just cost a little (lot!) more.
