A neat way to do this is to use frames.
You can have your main frame 'talk' to a hidden frame via javascript.
The hidden frame would call a php file, there by communicating with the
server.
There was a thread about a chess game here about a month ago. I
described this in a bit more detail there.
I use this ALOT on LAN based applications with great success. Never
tried it on the big bad net though. On the LAN with a fast server, I
can give feedback in realtime to the clients.
