Hierarchical List Question

I'm trying to do write some code that will look through a table with an ID and Parent_ID and create a hierarchical list of the results. ex. + Item 1 - subItem 1.1 - subItem 1.2 - subItem 1.3 - subItem 1.4 - subsubItem 1.4.1 - subsubItem 1.4.2 - subsubItem 1.4.3 + Item 2 - subItem 2.1 etc. I've only seen one example on the web - a Javascript menu building function.
