Ok guys, too many hours in front of a flat surface is a no-no.
Looks like the real problem was in a link which was passed this way
www.thissite.com/?screen=foo
and not in the complete form
www.thissite.com/index.phtml?screen=foo
IE 4 chokes on this, and so does Mozilla, but not NS 4.7x.
