I had never touched short_open_tag in PHP.ini and <?=$var?> outputs me $var
perfectly.
So I guess who would turn it off would know why script doesn't work.
However to be 100% compatible use: <?PHP echo $var?>
Yes, it looks 'longer' but that's the price of portability.
I am SURE at 195% that in this way it will always work, or PHP is not then
PHP ...
Cheers,
Maxim Maletsky.

Hey Lawrence-
Actually I understand the difference and that is not my question, it is
the history of this feature of <?= AND I do believe it can be turned off
with :
short_open_tag = 'off';
And this is why many do not use it that and it is not a php3 feature BUT I
am not 100% certain of this so am asking. It's pretty undocumented.
Thanks,
Philip
