They use something they call a "Virtual Kernel" where you have a partitioned-off system, you can only see your own PIDs, the web server is chrooted, etc. It's nifty stuff, although confusing to many folks who are used to a vanilla unix system, I suppose. You should have your own private httpd.conf, sendmail.cf and so forth to work with. > (a friend) I recently pointed devhome.net to my > virtual server, but I don't know how to set a > subdomain on the virtual server (devhome.net), which > is my primary concern but eventually would also want > to add subdomains to wwli.com (being the main server). > Do i need to fiddle with the SOA file or simply > putting the stuff in Apache works ? If you only have one IP to work with you can probably use Named virtualhosts (See the Apache web site, Iserver's documentation, or mail me privately for examples). I haven't played with the Iserver stuff in quite some time, and I forget if that's supposed as one would expect or not. Iserver has extensive documentation and examples on their web site, also. I believe that when I used the Iserver system, I had a "class B" virtual server, which has one IP and I used Named virtualhosts to do some 20 websites underneath it (I was using it to replace a failing legacy NT host that had been supporting a handful of MS Frontpage customers). I think "class B" has some other name these days but the concept is similar. > I also want to balance load on the server, hence I'm > trying out a friends server on another host. You'll have to (of course) make sure a web server is set up right on that other IP. Disclaimer: I don't work for that part of Verio, and I have only been exposed to Iserver's platform from the user perspective (I grabbed one for a project I was working on, and it has since been assigned to other uses and I don't have control of it anymore). So I don't have some magic "administrator" keys or inside knowledge here - just some experience using the product. The folks in our web hosting division are reputedly pretty good from a tech support angle (I've never called them myself). So you could also give Iserver a call (or an email) for some more specific details about their platform. I'm just making some educated guesses based on my experience using it a year or two ago. I believe support@iserver.com would be a good place to start to ask questions like this. Standard disclaimer: I speak for myself not Verio, etc, etc. HTH, -dan -- Dan Lowe <dan@tangledhelix.com> http://tangledhelix.com/ All good technology should be used to piss off people's parents. -Neil Gaiman
