IMAP-2000, PHP 4.03 & a fight vs. time!

Hello, I was wondering if any you had any success compiling php4 w/ imap ... my problem is that I should run it on a production server (rh 6.2.), and would like to have the least downtime ... I have actually php 4.01pl2 as an apache module (not DSO), and was wondering.... I've dowloaded imap-2000 .... I've run the make I've copied the c-client.a where said and all the other files ..... now ... what is best for me to do? 1) ./configure php --with imap and all the other options (btw, while doing it, getting php 4.03...) make make install go to apache, ./configure apache .... make make install ? While I do the php configure, untill I make the "make install", would php run normally, or do I need to shutdown apache while doing the operations? I'm really puzzled! Your help is greatly appreciated .... As I was wondering if the kerberos problems w/ RedHat 6.2 where solved, etc....
