In leiu of a less expensive (processing time wise) method, take a look at: http://www.php.net/manual/function.imap-open.php Test for an error, and bingo, you know whether the username & password combination is acceptable to the IMAP server, so something like this: if($mbox = @imap_open ("{localhost:443}INBOX", "user_id", "password")) { imap_close ($mbox); ... do stuff ... } Remember to use @ to supress any error output. Certain users, you see, can log back into the site to view the stats, others are just told "you already voted" (their username is stored in the "votetabulations" database). Does anyone have any good links to code, a tutorial - anything - on PHP and authenticating via an IMAP server? I have a simple form with two username/password text boxes... Any help is appreciated.
