I know this sounds wierd, and that I am under the weather right now, but...
it appears that my php.ini file has left the planet... !!!!!!!!!
using a browser display of phpinfo I get
<snip>
Build Date May 27 2000
Configure Command './configure' '--with-mysql'
'--with-apache=../apache_1.3.12' '--enable-track-vars'
Server API Apache
Virtual Directory Support disabled
Configuration File (php.ini) Path /usr/local/lib <<<<<========= should be
here right ?
ZEND_DEBUG enabled
<snip>
but there is NO php.ini file at that location...
if I type "locate php.ini" at the consol prompt, nothing comes up !!!!!!
do I need to go and get some rest, or am I in trouble ???
richard
PS apart from this, PHP has been working well for months !!!!

Look at the php.ini config file or at the configuration section of the
manual. In apache you can do something like:
php_value magic-quotes-gpc off
in httpd.conf.
