Installing PHP4 on a SuSE.6.4 with the PHP4 taken from www.php.net,
broke Apache.
Actually it didn't do things as it should in the LoadModules section of
the httpd.conf.
I corrected it manually and it worked, but afterwards I found an easier
method.
I installed PHP4.0.3.pl1 as it came from the SuSE distro which makes
everything work OK.
Then configure/make PHP as you like and replace only the .so file.
Just a guess,
