Sessions and Virtual Hosts

Apache/1.3.14, PHP/4.0.3pl1, FreeBSD 4.1
I've searched the web, documents, and newsgroups but can't find anything
written on configuration directives and virtual hosts. By experimentation,
I've found that I can't set a configuration directive in the virtual host
section of the Apache config file. Can someone confirm this? Also, is
there any consideration of enabling this? I'd like to be able to setup
sessions with my MySQL database on a per host basis.
