It will limit the fetch result. That is when you try
select * from table and has 500 rows, will fetch all 500 rows, but if you try
select * from table limit 10 will bring in the first 10 of the resultant query.
You can also say, from where to start in the result set and how far you want to get the result as
well using LIMIT.
