Ok thanks guys I got it working now.
The reason for the " was because I was passing it as part of the value
in a drop down list on a form, then when submit was clicked the form
calculated the result but also echo`d the options the user selected, in the
end I removed the " and just put it in where I was echo`ing the options
instead.
