I'm in a situation where I built a PHP/MySQL based shopping cart driven site
for a somewhat non-computer literate person. My solution was to supply him
with the tools to change text content, view the pictures that were online
and copy/rename them to the correct directory (hard coded in the tool) so
they would display where/when needed. I do all the scanning and uploading
of pictures. I also have a default "picture coming soon" image that
displays if the correct filename for the item image doesn't exist.

One thing that comes to mind though is what it's like to have a client
that's not web-savvy as for a project like this; this goes for the pictures
& thumbnails, especially. I'd say just put a field in the table that
references the location of the pictures (ie, "/pics/honda_civic_thumb.jpg",
etc). If they want to add new ones, let them come to you... unless you feel
like somebody there is capable enough to scan, size, optimize, and all that.
It's just a pain to try to teach somebody that doesn't get it... then they
complain that their website looks bad, or it just looks bad period and has
your name on it and people wonder why a site you designed looks bad. Just a
though ;)
