Oh, I can think of several reasons. The first that comes to my mind is a
webbased "ftp-service". Suppose you are a customer that can retrieve some
files from a supplier's extranet. You have a user account, and the files you
are allowed to retrieve are based on that account. By applying this method,
you can verify, that the file requested is actually allowed to be retrieved
by the customer before it is sent.
