Okay... sound of hollow dull laughter...
sorry to waste your time..
I had problems with the fields coming back from the remote database not
being correctly formatted (missing digits, etc) so I was testing locally BUT
setting the variable to the octal value in the script..
when I test with index.php?expire=0110201 all is beautiful.
You learn something every day - many thanks for the help.
